How can I overcome the feelings of loneliness?

I am an introvert. I feel comfortable by myself most of the time. But, making friends or meeting new people is difficult for me and sometimes, I get anxious about that. How can I overcome that?

Being an introvert does not mean you are doing anything wrong. You can genuinely enjoy your own company and still want closeness, friendship, and a sense of belonging.

  • It can help to notice the thoughts that show up before social situations—"What if I’m awkward?” “What if they don’t like me?” “I won’t know what to say.” Anxiety often makes us avoid situations, which feels better in the moment but can make meeting people feel even harder over time.
  • I would encourage you not to wait until you feel completely confident. Instead, ask yourself: What kind of connection do I actually want in my life? Then take small steps towards it while allowing some nervousness to come along with you.
  • You could start gently—message one person, attend a small group around something you already enjoy, stay for 30 minutes instead of forcing yourself to socialize for hours, or practice having one small conversation at a time.
  • You do not need lots of friends to feel connected. Sometimes one or two safe, meaningful relationships are enough.

And if the anxiety is stopping you from building the relationships you want, therapy can help you understand the thoughts behind it, practice social confidence gradually, and learn how to make room for anxiety without letting it choose your life for you.
