The Question

Anxiety and self pity

I talk too much to explain myself hoping people would understand me, I feel so lazy to do anything, not even my job and everything always seems to go wrong or not work out for me

I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. It sounds exhausting to constantly feel misunderstood and like you have to explain yourself while also feeling like nothing is working out.

Sometimes what we call “laziness” is actually feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, anxious, or emotionally tired. Over-explaining tends to happen when you’re afraid of being misunderstood or judged.

It may help to gently ask yourself:

  • What am I actually feeling right now?
  • What am I needing from people when I explain myself so much?
  •  Notice when you feel the need to explain yourself and ask, “Do I need to prove myself here?”

And when you feel yourself over-explaining, try asking, "Do I feel safe enough to let myself be misunderstood here?”

You deserve space to understand what is underneath all of this, without judging yourself for it. If you’d like support working through these patterns, you’re welcome to reach out for counselling.
